This is an opal doublet, and as such consists of a natural slice of opal overlaid on top of a natural colourless opal potch backing. This particular opal doublet has a boulder opal potch backing. Having this backing brings out the colour in the top layer of opal. Because of this effect, opal doublets can be the most bright and colourful opal.
